How to read the result
- First month: the maximum charge for the first loan period. In most states the full month is earned even if you pay early; Texas requires a partial refund when you redeem early.
- Total charges: the charges for the months you choose, as if you renewed each month or redeemed at the end.
- To get your item back: the loan plus those charges.
- Monthly rate: the first-month charge as a share of the loan. Multiply by 12 for a rough annual rate.
Questions
How is a pawn loan charge calculated?
Each state sets the formula. Some apply one monthly rate to the whole loan (Florida 25% per 30 days), some add interest and a fee (Tennessee 2% plus 20%), some use brackets by loan size (Texas) and some change the rate over time (Arizona, Georgia). The calculator applies your state's formula month by month.
Is the result what I will pay?
It is the most a shop can charge under state law. Many shops charge the maximum, some charge less. The pawn ticket must show the finance charge and the annual percentage rate.
What if my state has no cap?
For states where we have not verified a single statewide cap, the calculator asks for the monthly rate on your ticket and shows the cost with it.
Does the calculator include fees?
It includes the fees that the state formula counts in the monthly charge and the fixed fees we list as part of the formula (for example the $5 setup fee in Arizona and Nevada, and storage of $3 a month in Michigan and $6 in Ohio). Other optional fees are listed on each state page.
